About the Organization:

FreedomWorks, the nation’s leading free-market and limited government grassroots advocacy organization, seeks a full-time Development Director based in the DC, MD, VA area. This position offers potential for growth and the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and highly productive team as it raises funds towards advancing the organization’s mission. Above all else, this position requires a firm commitment to individual freedom. The Director of Development will work closely with the Executive Vice President to build sustainable fundraising programs. The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee the fundraising staff and vendors as well as liaison between FW programs staff and financial supporters. Background in conservative policy or politics is a plus.


About the Position:


Primary responsibilities include:


  • Staff Management
  • Recruit, hire, and manage development department staff and vendors to include including major gift officers, database manager, and others
  • Promote both a cadence of accountability and uplifting culture among the staff
  • Hold each staff member and vendor accountable for their annual development goals and make sure they have the resources required to succeed
  • Ensure each staff member and vendors priorities are met and tracked in the database and other systems
  • Hold regular (prescheduled at the same day each week) meetings to review progress and next actions
  • Act as a conduit for information from the program staff and leadership to the fundraising team; require program directors to deliver timely content for proposals, project updates, and budgets
  • Provide timely authorization of fundraising materials and concepts
  • Supervise the execution of the fundraising communications calendar to ensure donors and top prospects are reached via email and mail monthly
  • Supervise the execution of the trip calendar to ensure donors and top prospects are met with annually and as needed Systems Management
  • Develop, manage, and execute detailed development plans for each entity
  • Ensure the development department has the resources necessary to achieve success, which could be, but are not limited to:
    • Professional training
    • Functional databases, other tracking devices
    • Subscriptions to wealth screening tools
    • Operational HR procedures in place
    • Establish annual numerical goals, including number of donors by category, dollars raised, number of meetings, etc.
    • Review systems regarding key functions, such as gift processing and thank you letters, database management, donor research, and production of internal and external reports and analyses supporting these functions
    • Prepare regular status reports on budget projections, proposals pending, and cultivation process Donor Management
  • Assist the EVP by:
  • Maintaining an active list of contacts for cultivation and solicitation
  • Assisting with regular outreach to donors through phone calls, letters, and emails
  • Arranging meetings with donors and prospects for cultivation and solicitation



Required Qualifications:


  • Five or more years’ experience in fundraising, campaigns, policy, nonprofits, or sales
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive communications
  • Leadership and team management experience
  • Training in business, management, or a similar field
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple projects efficiently and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of conservative philanthropists, fundraising information sources, basic fundraising strategies, and research techniques
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership, donors, and staff
  • Successful experience in crafting and delivering presentations
  • Must be willing to and enjoy some travel
  • A deep interest in and understanding of politics and the freedom movement cause
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Bachelor’s degree
