Senior Development Associate

The American Conservative - Washington, D.C. or remote position

The Senior Development Associate will assist senior leadership in advancing the organization’s mission of promoting a “Main Street” conservatism that opposes unchecked power in government and business; promotes the flourishing of families and communities through vibrant markets and free people; and embraces realism and restraint in foreign affairs based on America's vital national interests.

The Senior Development Associate will be responsible for managing a caseload of major donors and foundations, coordinating the organization’s development and programming activities, and overseeing the implementation and achievement of TAC’s three-year 20th anniversary fundraising campaign. The Senior Development Associate will play a key role in building systems and structures as detailed in the campaign plan, including a major-donor club, a planned-giving society, and more formal development procedures and practices.

The Senior Development Associate will be expected to travel for in-person donor meetings, as well as to attend several events such as the annual foreign policy and crony capitalism conferences, gala, (and other select events on occasion) and represent The American Conservative and its mission.

Overall, the Senior Development Associate is responsible for supporting the development team in their efforts to advance the mission of TAC by inviting and enabling new supporters to join in that mission financially. The position is based remotely or in Washington, D.C. and will require travel. Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience.


  • Oversee the implementation of the 20th anniversary campaigns and continue to renew annual fund donations.
  • Coordinate TAC house file and prospecting mailings and digital campaigns.
  • Manage a caseload of top individual and foundation donors and prospects.
  • Travel for meetings with caseload donors, major prospects, and relevant events and conferences (between 100 – 120 meetings per year).
  • Ensure that the development team achieves its clearly-articulated goals, both individually and as a team.
  • Facilitate collaboration between the development and programming efforts of TAC, including updating senior staff on development progress and engaging programs and support staff in development efforts as necessary.
  • Consistently evaluate departmental performance and identify areas and methods for growth.


  • Deep passion for the particular mission of The American Conservative, especially our goal to promote realism and restraint in American foreign policy.
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years of relevant fundraising and nonprofit experience is required, including experience directly cultivating a caseload of donors.
  • Superior time management skills and relational intelligence.
  • Superior writing, speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with development moves management systems (Salesforce experience a plus).
  • Strong ability to communicate TAC’s mission and build strong personal relationships with prospective and current major donors.
  • Ability to drive and maintain momentum on tasks that are team-based and tasks that are pursued individually.
  • Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) skills experience.
