The Grand Canyon Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA) seeks a Donor Relations Officer to manage a caseload of major donors. The Donor Relations Officer will be an integral member of the development team and be primarily donor facing.

About the Position:  

The Donor Relations Officer will reflect the passion of the BSA to educate young people to make ethical and moral choices through experiences with the outdoors. The Officer does not need to have been a boy scout or affiliated with the BSA previously, but the ideal candidate will embody a commitment to the values of personal integrity, self-reliance, sound decision making, and lasting friendships to develop character and good citizenship in young people so that they may be leaders who build better communities.   

The Donor Relations Officer will be interested in and comfortable with meeting new people, cultivating relationships, and learning how to make larger asks. Being able to form strong relationships with different types of people is required to achieve philanthropic goals. Roughly 50% of the position will be spent out of the office, traveling locally to meet with donors at various locations within the state. While the position is mostly donor facing, a successful Officer will be highly organized and detail oriented to schedule, communicate, document, and research current and prospective donors. 

The Officer will be an energetic, communicative, and industrious person, who enjoys not only supporting development strategies, but also identifying ways to improve ongoing strategies. A strong candidate will take the initiative to learn and effectively utilize fundraising tools and metrics to drive strategy. The position reports directly to the Director of Development and supports the Director with key strategic endeavors and fundraising events. This full-time location is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes a full benefits package.   

About the BSA Grand Canyon Council:  

The BSA is a national organization that instills adventure, family, and character through scouting programs that helps place young people in the middle of action to prepare them to make ethical decisions for both today and throughout their lives. Founded in 1910, the BSA is one of the largest youth organization in the United States, with approximately 2.3 million youth participants and 1 million adult volunteers.

In recent years, BSA has updated policies and programs to be more inclusive, and girls can participate in all programs at this time. The mission remains the same despite any policy changes—“to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.”

Grand Canyon Council is based in Scottsdale and is legally and financially independent of BSA and operates four camps in the state of Arizona that serve as outdoor learning laboratories for Scouts.

Primary Responsibilities:  

The Donor Relations Officer’s primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:  

  • Managing a personal caseload of donors. 
  • Identifying and researching prospective donors. 
  • Supporting some event-based fundraising.
  • Developing and executing individual strategies for engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and retaining donors.  
  • Traveling in state for in-person cultivation and solicitation meetings with existing and prospective donors. 
  • Maintaining accurate and thorough records of meetings, notes, and gifts.
  • Representing the Grand Canyon Council, BSA in the community.
  • Working collaboratively and providing regular updates to the development team. 
  • Supporting the Director of Development and Scout Executive, as needed. 

Key Qualifications:  

The successful candidate will  

  • Demonstrate close personal alignment with the BSA’s mission and values. 
  • Possess strong ability to communicate the mission and build personal relationships with current and prospective donors.  
  • Be comfortable making asks and taking the initiative to learn fundraising skills. 
  • Possess interpersonal maturity needed to form strong working relationships. 
  • Have diligence and follow through in researching and cultivating prospects. 
  • Be goal-oriented, flexible, and highly organized.
  • Have familiarity with CRM (preferred). 
  • Be able to travel up to 50% within the state.
