Director of Development


Grand Canyon Council Boy Scouts of America - Phoenix, Arizona

The Grand Canyon Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA) seeks a Director of Development to oversee its development department through the coordination of strategic endeavors, management of development personnel, and formation of relationships with key stakeholders.  

 About the Position: 

The Director of Development will be passionate about educating young people to make ethical and moral choices through experiences with the outdoors. The Director does not need to have been affiliated with BSA previously, but the ideal candidate will embody a commitment to the values of personal integrity, self-reliance, sound decision making, and lasting friendships to develop character and good citizenship in young people so that they may be leaders who build better communities.  

The Director will build formal stewardship structures and processes, evaluate key metrics, and expand the development initiatives for major and prospective donors, annual- and planned-giving, foundation grants, and fundraising events. The Director will be collaborative and supportive in overseeing development staff, field officers, and volunteers.  A successful candidate will embody a strong vision for a healthy fundraising culture, have experience with management, be able to effectively utilize fundraising tools and metrics to drive strategy, and be comfortable taking initiative to implement new programs. The Director will possess exceptional communication skills, have interpersonal maturity, and have demonstrated success with major donor cultivation and solicitation.  

This full-time location is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and will require no more than 40% travel within the state. The Director will report directly to the Scout Executive/CEO and regularly present to the board. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes a full benefits package.  

 About the Grand Canyon Council, BSA: 

The BSA is a national organization that instills adventure, family, and character through scouting programs that helps place young people in the middle of action to prepare them to make ethical decisions for both today and throughout their lives. Founded in 1910, the BSA is one of the largest youth organization in the United States, with approximately 2.3 million youth participants and 1 million adult volunteers. In recent years, BSA has updated policies and programs to be more inclusive, and girls can participate in all programs at this time. The mission remains the same despite any policy changes—“to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.” The Scout Oath includes in order of responsibility: duty to God and country, duty to other people, and duty to self.  

Grand Canyon Council is based in Phoenix and is legally and financially independent of BSA and operates five camps in the state of Arizona that serve as outdoor learning laboratories for Scouts.

Primary Responsibilities: 

The Director of Development’s primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following: 

  • Effectively leading the development functions in Grand Canyon Council to attain financial goals.
  • Managing development staff and supporting field staff and volunteers. 
  • Overseeing all major donors, including personal caseload that requires 15-20 in-person meetings per month and travel throughout the state.
  • Identifying prospective donors, foundations, and partnerships. 
  • Supporting annual giving campaign and planning annual specials events (e.g. sporting clays, golf tournament, and other similar events).
  • Implementing and overseeing key performance metrics. 
  • Regularly evaluating departmental performance to identify areas and methods for growth.
  • Ensuring accurate recording of meetings, notes, and gifts, including a quarterly report for all gifts.
  • Crafting development messaging and communications.
  • Supporting the Scout Executive/CEO and presenting regularly at Board meetings. 
  • Representing the Grand Canyon Council, BSA in the community.

Key Qualifications: 

3+ years of relevant fundraising and nonprofit experience is required, including experience directly cultivating a caseload of donors, and, preferably, have proven track record of raising $300,000+ annually.  

  • Demonstrate close personal alignment with the BSA’s mission and values.
  • Be able to take initiative, lead projects, and inspire others.
  • Be able to collaborate with colleagues to drive decision-making.
  • Have superior writing, speaking, and presentation skills. 
  • Possess strong ability to communicate the mission and build personal relationships with prospective and current major donors.
  • Possess analytical skills needed to develop and use metrics to drive strategy.
  • Be very organized and flexible in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have experience managing a small team.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and have familiarity with CRM (Salsa a plus!)
  • Be able to travel up to 40%.
