Director of Advancement

Position Summary

The Director of Advancement will be responsible for managing up to the CEO and coordinating the organization’s development activities with existing programming. The Director of Advancement will be responsible for overseeing a diverse caseload and a robust fundraising plan, ensuring that objectives are met, and each team member’s responsibilities are fulfilled. The Director of Advancement will play a key role in building important individual and foundation relationships. The Director of Advancement will be expected to travel for in-person donor meetings, as well as to attend events and represent Teneo and its mission. 

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in high-level fundraising and knowledge of task management. The success of this role will be directly measured by the confidence entrusted upon this person by the CEO, and the role will focus heavily upon helping the CEO to be more efficient with his time related to fundraising. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years in a similar role and a track record of success. While not required, an advanced degree would be a plus for this position. The Director of Advancement is responsible for creating a healthy and robust fundraising culture at Teneo, and supporting the team in their efforts to advance the mission of Teneo by inviting and enabling financial partners to join in that mission.

Primary Responsibilities

The Director of Advancement’s primary responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following: 

  • Setting fundraising goals and objectives, metrics, and supporting the CEO in the execution of the development plan.
  • Managing a defined portfolio of donors and donor prospects.
  • Developing and executing strategies for engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and retaining donors, including overseeing the creation, launch, and implementation of a donor club.
  • Creating strategic stewardship strategies and systems of acknowledgement.
  • Overseeing foundation and corporate giving, including sponsorships of major events.
  • Managing the development calendar.
  • Traveling for face-to-face cultivation and solicitation meetings with existing donors and donor prospects.
  • Representing Teneo at events and coordinating Teneo fundraising events.
  • Maintaining accurate and thorough records and use data to refine fundraising objectives and methodologies.
  • Working collaboratively and providing regular updates to the CEO, and supporting the CEO as needed.
  • Serving as a primary point of contact with Teneo’s development consultants.

Qualifications, Competencies, and Strengths

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred, though not necessary.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a business and/or experience in high-level fundraising

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in relation to information and documentation

  • Collegial and able to work well with others in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven experience in project coordination
  • Strong digital literacy, particularly in Mac iOS or Windows, Microsoft Office, Google and Adobe suites; experience with Airtable is a plus
