The primary responsibilities of a managing consultant at American Philanthropic are overseeing multiple ongoing client engagements with an emphasis on campaign engagements, leading business development, and managing other American Philanthropic employees. The managing consultant is the lead consultant, offering high-level strategic consulting and managing staff members. Likewise, this position works closely with members of the American Philanthropic staff to ensure that the firm continues to meet a high standard of excellence in serving its clients and fulfilling its obligations.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
Engagement Lead and Consulting
Consulting regularly with clients—both personally and via e-mail, Zoom/conference calls, etc.—on a wide range of management, development, institutional-advancement programs, and communication projects and issues;
Directing fundraising campaign feasibility and planning studies, drafting study materials, conducting personal, confidential interviews, and compiling written report with findings and recommendations;
Drafting comprehensive, multi-year strategic campaign plans for a number of different sectors from educational, religious, and other civic and social nonprofits;
Managing direct campaigns for clients including coordination and oversight of campaign operation, campaign board development, training campaign leadership and volunteers, overseeing solicitation of gifts in various phrases, and preparing and presenting a final report of campaign results and follow-up action plan;
Advising on client messaging and assisting with the creation of campaign collateral materials;
Managing and/or advising on client direct mail; and
Reviewing grant proposals, solicitation letters, and other documents.
Overseeing Client Deliverables and Managing Staff
Overseeing quality and performance of project members;
Reviewing client deliverables and ensuring their timely delivery;
Managing tracking sheets, budgets, development calendars, moves management, and other planning tools for both internal and external use;
Ensuring successful coordination of competing priorities and deadlines;
Continually providing clarity and direction to staff and clients alike; and
Sending monthly client reports, as needed.
Business Development and Other
Leading business development outreach, including proposal development and current and prospective client cultivation;
Building relationships of trust with key members of the philanthropic community;
Assisting with the performance of other executive, managerial, and administrative tasks, as needed; and
Representing the firm at client meetings, conferences, seminars, and other events.
Ideally, this position is located near the Denver office, but a remote position will be considered for exceptional candidates. 6–10 days per month in travel may be required, depending on client needs.
6+ years of professional experience, including nonprofit and campaign fundraising experience. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:
Strong communication and collegiality, as well as a capacity to build personal relationships of trust and respect both with clients and colleagues;
Excellent at getting and keeping business, including effective cultivation and maintenance of current clients and cold leads;
An adaptability to new situations to bring intellectual order out of sometimes ambiguous and opaque information environments;
An exceptional ability to multi-task, effectively managing many competing deadlines and client priorities with a high degree of prudence and conscientiousness;
Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills, as demonstrated by consistently thorough and thoughtful execution of client work;
Capacity to manage people and work flow for groups sized 4-8 people;
Familiarity with research tools such as Wealth Engine, iWave, and Foundation Directory, as well as Salesforce;
A strong work ethic, humble manner, and demonstrated willingness to go above and beyond when necessary; and
A desire and ability to effectively contribute to company culture and value practical wisdom, excellence, integrity, hard work, and conviviality.
In addition, the candidate will demonstrate interest in and facility with contemporary American political, cultural, sociological, and economic discourse, especially as those realms of thinking impinge upon civil society. A strong commitment to the American Philanthropic mission of strengthening society’s “little platoons”—the independent mediating institutions and voluntary associations that constitute civil society and are vital to human flourishing—is expected.
