American Philanthropic is a growing, national philanthropic consulting and services firm with offices in the Philadelphia, Chicago, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. metro areas. American Philanthropic works with charitable foundations and nonprofits to strengthen civil society—those nongovernmental, non-market-based associations and organizations which are vital to the health of our democracy. To do this, we offer strategic organizational and development analysis and planning services, as well as a variety of services related to fundraising and development including development training, messaging and branding assistance, creation of donor-oriented materials and solicitations, donor prospect research, and direct mail program management, among others. More information is available at www.americanphilanthropic.com.
As a business development associate, you will be responsible for taking the lead on drafting and editing business development proposals for potential clients, refining the proposal process, and assisting with other business development–related tasks as needed. You will work with other members of the American Philanthropic staff and to ensure that the firm continues to meet a high standard of excellence in presenting its work to potential clients.
The sort of work in which you may be engaged includes:
You will work remotely from a home office, and may need to travel as needed for company trainings and events. You will report to American Philanthropic’s Director of Client Engagement.
You should have at least two years of professional experience, preferably in a nonprofit development setting. Liberal arts background preferred.
More importantly, you should have a portfolio that demonstrates keen intelligence, an eye for detail, success in managing multiple projects simultaneously, a high degree of personal initiative and conscientiousness, and superb interpersonal skills. You must have facility with basic computer software programs and design platforms, be a skilled writer and editor, a fast learner, and a self-starter who accomplishes tasks and makes consistent progress on projects with minimal supervision. You must take personal ownership of projects and be passionate about helping the company and its clients succeed. Ideally, you will be a generalist who can adapt quickly to new situations and bring intellectual order out of sometimes ambiguous and opaque information environments.
In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the American Philanthropic mission of strengthening society’s “little platoons”—the independent mediating institutions and voluntary associations that constitute civil society and are vital to human flourishing. And you should be enthusiastic about the opportunity to help build a fast-growing consulting and services firm into a major force in American philanthropy.
