Literary Representation Agency Services AmP Literary provides premium literary agency services for selected authors. In order to maximize their chances of achieving success in today’s publishing world, we act not only as our clients’ agents, but also as their strategic partners. As part of our typical services, we: - advise and consult with the author on the manuscript’s development, addressing editorial concerns such as voice, structure, length, title, and many other matters important in determining a book’s success
- develop innovative, effective ideas for promotion and publicity that can be undertaken by the author with or without a publisher’s support
- advise the author on grant-seeking strategies and grant proposal preparation
- work closely with the author in preparing the book proposal, ensuring that it persuasively puts forth the argument for the book’s importance and saleability and otherwise covers those issues which matter most to acquisitions editors
- identify the publishers—especially leading trade and university presses—likely both to be interested in the book and to be effective in maximizing its readership
- pitch the proposal to the appropriate editors
- help the author to develop the proposal in light of feedback from editors
- advise the author on offers received and make recommendations
- negotiate a contract with the author’s best interests in mind
- aggressively seek to sell subsidiary and/or foreign rights
- act as the author’s advocate after the manuscript has been accepted and passes through the editorial, production, and post-publication phases
The fee for these services is negotiated in advance on a project-by-project basis. Typically, a fee is charged in addition to the commission but is deducted from the advance, when received. The commission rate is 15 percent. AmP Literary additionally offers professional editorial (substantive editing, copy editing, and proofreading), publicity, design, and fundraising services. We are happy to quote rates for these services to interested authors. We only work with authors whose work we believe in and which aligns with the mission of American Philanthropic; as such, our mission is to help our clients reach as wide a readership as possible—and to be compensated fairly for their work. Authors who become our clients can expect consistent attention and assertive, professional representation. If you are an author who would like to be considered for representation, please send us a description of your project(s), a sample chapter or other writing sample, and your CV. |
